Mathematics Week was celebrated from December 20 to December 22, 2023 by Department of Mathematics, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. The week was filled with enlightening sessions, presentations and discussions aimed at showcasing the significance of mathematics in various fields.
Day 1, December 20, 2023 started with formal welcome of all the participants. Then Prof. Asha Gupta, HOD, set the tone for the week by highlighting the importance of celebration of “Mathematics Week”. She briefed the audience about Ramanujan's remarkable achievements . Prof. Rintu Khanna, highlighted the importance of Mathematics in Engineering. Prof. Sucheta discussed Ramanujan's diverse contributions in various areas of mathematics.
Then there was a stimulating session by expert Prof. Sudesh Kaur Khanduja, INSA Honorary Scientist IISER Mohali Professor Emeritus Dept. of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh entitled "An Interaction with Numbers". She discussed prime numbers, some results of elementary Number Theory and mathematical functions. Some aspects of the life and work of Srinivasa Ramanujan were highlighted. Moreover, the contributions of some of the pioneers of this subject from Pierre de Fermat to Fields Medalist (2022) James Maynard were highlighted. A few award-winning open problems on computing were also stated. After that, day 1 continued with presentations by Ph.D. scholars On Day 2, December 21, 2023, a captivating documentary on Ramanujan, enriched participants with insights into the renowned mathematician's life and contributions. Then day 2 continued with presentations by Ph.D. scholars.
On Day 3, December 22, 2023, Dr. Neela Pawar, an expert from Department of Mathematics, MCM DAV College, Chandigarh. enlightened the audience with a session on Vedic Mathematics, titled "Bhartiya Ganit- Ek Yatra." This session provided a unique perspective on mathematical principles. The talk was regarding the emergence of Indian Mathematics in Indian subcontinent. The work done by ancient mathematicians of various time periods was discussed. It started from the signs of presence of mathematics in Indus Valley Civilization. The starting of mathematics in Vedic Period to its growth in Classical Period was the highlight of the talk. The work done in the field of mathematics by Kerala School of Mathematics and Jain mathematicians was also given due importance. The lecture ended with solving mathematical problems with a few techniques of Vedic Mathematics.
The event's success was marked by fruitful intellectual discussions and a platform that facilitated interaction between students and experts across diverse mathematical topics. We believe that such initiatives significantly contribute to the academic and intellectual growth of our institution.
