SPIC MACAY Lecture by Dr Kiran Seth
SPIC MACAY is a Society for the promotion of Indian classical music,
classical dance and culture amongst youth in the society. The society
was founded by Dr. Kiran Seth on 1977 at IIT Delhi.
He gave a guest lecture to the students of the
PEC University of Technology on 26 March 2010. He talked about experiences and how
they led
to the founding society of SPIC MACAY. While doing
his PhD from Columbia University, in early seventies, he came across
a small advertisement in a weekly newspaper ‘Village Voice’, which was
was about an upcoming concert. It was after attending that concert
that his views had changed about Indian culture.
He also talked about the difference in philosophy of people from the west and the east.
A westerner will think that he should change the
surroundings about him to bring him relief and respite but an
easterner will think that the trouble he experiences is due to his
senses and he then practices yoga to soothen his nerves thus bringing
him inner respite. He expressed concern over the dwindling awareness relating to Indian culture,
yoga and Indian dance. He stressed on the fact that we Indians should
not loose our heritage as it is very essential for our peace and
prosperity. Finally he conducted an exercise of pranayam among the crowd. He said
that the prnayam helps one to concentrate and be a better person. The
exercise included 4 parts: Deep breathing, Deep retention, Exhaling
and Shuunya. Dr Kiran Seth encouraged the students of PEC to start a chapter of SPIC MACAY on the campus. Students expressed their gratitude by standing and
thanking him wholeheartedly.
