Student designed model withstands vibrations comparable to those felt in the 2001 Bhuj earthquake

PEC  University Of Technology (Civil Engineering Dept.) team succeeded bagging  a “Quake Resistant Certificate” at this year's APEC-IDEERS competition, competing with 41 international teams in the undergraduate category.  The competition, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation – Introducing and Demonstrating  Earthquake  Engineering in Schools has in fact increased the level of difficulty just this year --requiring participants to apply their knowledge and skills under actual challenges and constraints. Unshaken, the PEC team calmly designed a tower able to carry the heaviest loads while undergoing simulated ground shaking, comparable to those felt in the 2001 Bhuj earthquake. This is the first time an  undergraduate team from PEC has achieved such recognition for an earthquake resistant structure. The team comprised of Piyush Bharti Arora, Manik Jain, Suhail Sharma and Penaaz gupta. All  the students are final year undergraduate students of Civil Engineering Department. This international seismic resistant structural design competition is aimed at promoting Earthquake Engineering and seismic protection education. This program was based on the concept of "Learning  from Doing", and has grown into a creative and innovative competition activity. It is hosted and organized annually by the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) in Taiwan with National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL), the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR), the Asia-Pacific Network of Centers for Earthquake Engineering Research (ANCER), the British Council and the University of Bristol. The PEC team clearly demonstrated their in-depth understanding and appreciation of the principles behind seismic resistant structures by coming out with their model which was able to withstand 600 gals of peak ground acceleration( higher than a Richter 7.0 earthquake). The team acknowledges the kind support from the Director Dr. Manoj Datta  and the Department of Civil Engineering, PEC University of Technology.
